~ the deepest signs of abuse are on the inside ~

Dear Teddy

Teddy, I’ve been bad again, my mommy told me so
I'm not quite sure what I did wrong, but I thought that you should know
When I woke up this morning, I knew that she was mad
‘Cause she was crying awful hard, and yelling at my dad

I tried my best to be real good, and do just what she said
I cleaned my room all by myself, I even made my bed
But I spilled milk on my good shirt, when she yelled at me to hurry
And I guess she didn’t hear me, when I told her I was sorry.

‘Cause she hit me awful hard, you see, and called me funny names
and told me I was really bad, and that I should be ashamed!
When I said "I love you mommy, I guess she didn’t understand
‘Cause she yelled at me to shut my mouth, or I’d get smacked again.

So I came up here to talk to you, please tell me what to do
‘Cause I really love my mommy, and I know she loves me too
And I don’t think my mommy means to hit me quite so very hard
I guess sometimes grown ups forget, how really big they are!

So teddy, I wish you were real, and you weren’t just a teddy bear
Then you could help me find a way to tell mommy’s everywhere
To please try hard to understand, how sad it makes me feel
‘Cause the outside pain soon goes away, but the inside never heals!

And if we could make them listen, maybe then they’d understand
So other children just like me, wouldn’t have to hurt again
But for now I guess I’ll hold you tight and pretend the pain’s not there
I know you’d never hurt me, so goodnight teddy bear!

A Prayer for Children

We pray for children who put chocolate fingers everywhere, who like to be tickled, who stomp in puddles and ruin their new pants, who sneak popsicles before supper, who erase holes in math workbooks, who can never find their shoes.

And we pray for those who stare at photographers from behind barbed wire, who can't bound in the street in a new pair of sneakers, who never go to the circus, who live in an X-rated world.

We pray for children who bring us sticky kisses and fistfuls of dandelions, who sleep with the dog and bury the goldfish, who hug us in a hurry and forget their lunch money, who cover themselves with Band-Aids and sing off key, who squeeze toothpaste all over the sink, who slurp their soup.

And we pray for those who never get dessert, who have no safe blanket to drag behind them, who watch their parents watch them die, who can't find any bread to steal, who don't have any rooms to clean up, whose monsters are real.

We pray for children who spends all their allowance before Tuesday, who throw tantrums in the grocery store and pick at their food, who like ghosts stories, who shove dirty clothes under the bed and never rinse the tub, who get visits from the tooth fairy, who don't like to be kissed in front of the carpool, who squirm in church and scream in the phone, whose tears we sometimes laugh at, and whose smiles can make us cry.

And we pray for those whose nightmares come in the daytime, who will eat anything, who aren't spoiled by anybody, who go to bed hungry and cry themselves to sleep, and who live and move, but have no being.

We pray for children who want to be carried and for those who must, for those we never give up on and for those who don't get a second chance. For those we smother....and for those who will grab the hand of anybody kind enough to offer it.

Precious face so full of tears
Look to God to calm your fears
Calm the hurt and small arms bruised
With the angels songs be soothed

Try not to cry my little one
Your journey to heaven has just begun
Forget the pain and try to sleep
The Lord above your soul will keep

Forgive yourself, you've done no wrong
Though you've been told that for so long
The one's that hurt you will pay dear
Don't you worry, their judgements near

For every child that's loved and more
There lives a child abused "next door"
Remember the children who have no love
Except from the gracious Lord above.

~ it is never to late to have a happy childhood ~

"When mistreatment becomes abuse, children are injured, neglected, and emotionally damaged.
Approximately 1,000 to 1,300 U.S. children are known to die as a result of physical abuse,
and those who survive suffer emotional trauma that lasts long after the bruises have healed."
